The First Rule of Success: See Your Vision

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be discovering what we need to set in place for the success we’re looking for to come to us. You see success doesn’t just happen. We need to nurture the right conditions, both externally and internally, for it to become a reality in our lives. We need to do this because if we don’t, we are simply living in the vain hope that something nice will happen to us – one day. No, we must prepare the ground of our lives, and our minds, in the same way a gardener prepares the soil of his garden. We must turn over the layers of our thinking so that we are not only thinking success but also acting out that success here and now.

But first, for our success to come to us we have to decide what it looks like. We need to sit down calmly and quietly look within ourselves and SEE, in bright light, crystal clarity and even 3D what it is that we want. We need to see ourselves in the picture enjoying that moment and, most importantly, we need to FEEL the emotion of that moment. There are very good reasons for feeling the emotional state which I don’t have the time or space here to go into but it is enough to say that it is through emotion that we empower our vision and give energy to it.

Once you have seen your vision and have it clearly in your sights, write it down, or better yet, find pictures of what it is you want and put up a vision board so you can see it on a daily basis. It will not only continue to inspire you but it will help you to assign the energy to it on a daily basis. You all know how the events of life can distract us from our plans so if you have the board up in a space that you see regularly at home, you’ll keep your focus on your vision and continue to feed it the energy required.

Aside from giving energy to your vision you also give energy to yourself by allowing yourself to be inspired by your vision. In fact, as I have written in a previous blog, it is the vision that if it is bigger than the daily requirements to achieve it that will CAUSE you to do the things you need to do to achieve it. Remember what I said; “The difference between successful people and failures is that successful people do the things that failures don’t want to do.” In other words, the failures are interested in pleasant activities and successful people are interested in the outcomes no matter what they have to do. By that I don’t mean that they do anything immoral or illegal because the ends DO NOT justify the means. I mean that they do those things that they know need to be done even though they would rather be doing something else.

So make your vision BIG! Let your mind and your heart go wild. Do you want a bigger home, or maybe a portfolio of properties? Is it a car, or collection of cars you want? Maybe it is your business, or the one you work for, that you want to see succeed? Is a yacht in your heart or is it that you want to have your kids go to a great school and have the important things in life that you didn’t have? For me, I want to set up a foundation that seeds into the lives of our indigenous young people so that they can have their vision for a great life instead of a life paid for by welfare. I want to give them their future. I also want to seed in to the lives of African people so that they can become self-sufficient. That is my vision. It is a vision that is not only bigger than me but it is one that will outlive me. I will leave a legacy. More importantly, I will aim to live that legacy by achieving the foundation and running it.

You all know that Paul Newman has been dead for some time now, yet his vision, his legacy lives on after him. His foundation, which receives funds from the Newman’s Own range of foods, has donated over 300 million dollars to worthwhile causes to date! Now that is a vision that would drive someone to greatness wouldn’t you agree?

So, how do we develop our vision? Jim Tressel wrote:

“ The first step in creating an improved future is developing the ability to envision it.

  • VISION will ignite the fire of passion which fuels our commitment to do WHATEVER IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE
  • VISION allows us to transfer dreams of greatness into the reality of achievement through human action
  • VISION has no boundaries and knows no limits. VISION is what we become in life.

So get you vision clear and down on paper. Look at it EVERY day and say to yourself that you are so glad that this is already coming into your life. Gratitude is the next important thing to instigate into your life after the vision. It is the key that unlocks what is about to come into your life. I even have what I call a gratitude stone that I carry in my pocket every day. Each time I put my hand into my pocket and touch the stone, I think of what I am grateful for. It may be for the clean running water in my home, my family, and the bus that comes just as I reach the bus stop, my friends, my health, my mind or whatever. Over 40 times a day I am in an attitude of gratitude and I can tell you that the change in your life from such an amount of gratitude is mind-blowing. Try it for a month and see what happens to your life.

Now, you must not mistake vision for goals. Goals are what will get you to your vision but they are not your vision. We will talk another day about goals but for now let me say this: Once you have your vision, work backwards to set out what goals you need to reach your vision. Now to reach your goals you need to work backwards to set out what targets you need to achieve to reach your goals in order to reach your vision. Then, you sit down to establish what micro targets, those you need to do on a daily basis, to reach your targets. So. If you reach your daily micro targets you WILL reach your targets. When you reach your targets you WILL achieve your goals. When you reach your goals you WILL step into your vision. It is all about a system, a system that will empower you to reach your full potential and your vision.

So set out your vision. Make it clear, make it grand, and make it bigger than yourself. Have fun with it too! Don’t settle for what you think you can get away with. Life will pay you the wages you ask for so ask big. People often say to set reasonable goals. What they mean is ones that won’t fail, small ones. If you want mediocrity then go ahead and be mediocre. But if you want to be all that you were born to be then DREAM!

Once you have your vision and put it on paper we will then look at attitude, mindset and our emotional environment. Until then, find your vision and LOVE it!

I love your perspective on goals versus vision… people easily confuse that. Great post.
